Description
9 Hole beginner friendly pitch-and-putt course designed by Harold Duvall Jr. Two practice putting baskets, both of which are DISCatcher Pro 28s. The course makes good use of the elevation changes on the bluff line of the Cape Fear River valley, in which Tory Hole Park resides. The elevation changes are not drastic, but considering this is a beginner course, it adds up to a unique mix of qualities not typically found in one course in the coastal plains region. Course is great for practicing approach shots due to the fact that many holes have multiple ways of approaching them, which sets up nicely for playing multiple rounds back to back and switching your plan of attack between rounds. A few holes have greens that require distance control, as going long or wide on them can put you in ditches, creeks, or muddy wetland. Hole 1 has mature trees guarding the green, but they still give options for what shot to throw - miss small, hit tree - miss big, maybe squeak through another gap. Hole 2's green slopes away to a deep ditch, which is only 15ft away from the basket Hole 3 has marsh left and long of the green. Hole 4's basket is on an elevated mound, making putting a risk-reward decision. Hole 6 has a creek you have to push toward off the tee before doglegging right back toward the basket. Hole 7 has a 10ft gap guarding the green. There's an alternate tee-pad farther back to make the shot a bit more demanding, Hole 8 is a fun dogleg right with a 15ft elevation drop directly off the tee. Hole 9 is a 228ft dead straight tunnel shot with a 6ft gap 40ft off the tee and another 6ft gap 15ft before the basket. If you pure the tunnel and go 30ft long, you'll land in a creek. Another great aspect of the course and park is that low foot traffic allows for amazing safari golf (make up your own holes), just make sure you've checked twice to be sure you're not throwing on someone or impeding standard course flow. You will definitely need insect repellent. Can become muddy in certain spots after very heavy rains; plan accordingly.
